»Unlike many augmented reality applications, the HoloMed concept has been tailored to a specific and highly relevant use case. The jury has been convinced by the skillful application of AR and gaze control technology in combination with a non-distracting and precise interface design. The result can credibly support neurosurgeons in very stressful situations with no failure tolerance. The reduction of failure rates in ventricular punctures would significantly improve patient security and is therefore worthy of an award.«

Three questions to the project team
What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
The solution has to fit into existing clinical workflows with no room for error.
What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
It was a great experience to see our prototype in action in the OR setting. That the procedure on a plastic skull was successful with the first try was even better. To actually see the success on a CT scan was amazing. A low light was the user feedback, that the AR goggles are too heavy, because we can't fix this issue as a project team. All we can do is wait for better devices from Microsoft and other companies.
Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
With HoloMed, we want to encourage Med-Tech-companies to use future technologies like AR to build solutions that are based on real user problems and therefore drastically improve patient outcomes. In 5 years, we hope that our solution has made the leap from German plastic skulls to real patients all over Europe.
