Three questions for the project team

What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
The main UX challenge was designing a solution that addressed both engagement issues and practical constraints faced by ESL learners. The project needed to transform the passive, flexible learning experience to fit into the busy lives of adults. This required creating a platform that balanced digital convenience with real-world language application, while also fostering a sense of community. The UX had to cater to diverse user needs, including personalized learning paths, interactive AI-powered conversation practice, and easy access to library resources.

The design needed to bridge the gap between online and in-person learning, ensuring a seamless experience for users with varying technological proficiencies and cultural backgrounds.

What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
Our personal highlight in the development process was witnessing the positive feedback from users during the usability testing phase. The aha! moment came when we realized the impact of integrating AI-powered conversational practice, which significantly boosted learners' confidence and engagement.

A low point was during the initial research phase when we discovered the underutilization of library resources despite their accessibility. This realization was disheartening but ultimately motivated us to create a more engaging and user-friendly solution. By focusing on user needs and leveraging advanced technologies, we transformed these challenges into opportunities, resulting in a platform that truly meets the needs of ESL learners.

Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
In five years, we envision Anchor expanding nationwide beyond New Jersey, serving diverse immigrant communities. Our team aims to enhance the platform with advanced AI, smart device integration and augmented reality for real-time language assistance.

Anchor will evolve beyond ESL into a comprehensive skill development ecosystem. Through user feedback and technological advances, we'll create more adaptive, personalized learning experiences. Our goal is for Anchor to become a global model for libraries and educational institutions. By bridging linguistic and cultural gaps, we hope to empower countless individuals in their journey to adapt and thrive in their new homes.
