Three questions to the project team
What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
The main challenge of the ActiveSenior project from a UX perspective was identifying and addressing the difficulties elderly users in small towns with limited healthcare facilities face, particularly those dealing with sarcopenia. The core idea was to make wearable sensor devices and app interfaces more user-friendly and tailored to elderly users' needs. Additionally, considering the low digital literacy of the target group, we focused on integrating both online and offline features. The project offers AI-based diagnostics and real-time monitoring via wearable sensors and the app, while collaborating with local community centres for offline support and digital literacy programs, aiming to enhance accessibility and reduce social isolation.
What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
The most highlight moment for me came during the user testing phase when we received positive feedback from elderly users. Initially, we struggled to make the sensor devices intuitive for seniors who were not familiar with digital technology. However, through close collaboration with the users, conducting interviews, and iterating on revising the design, we found the balance between simplicity and functionality. The 'aha!' moment came when users expressed their desire to continue using the app and wearable sensor, showing us that accessible technology for seniors is not only possible but has the potential to be integrated into their daily lives, providing a sustainable solution with great promise.
Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
Currently, as a service designer at a digital healthcare company, I am gaining valuable experience and plan to pursue a master’s degree in service design to deepen my knowledge. Over the next few years, I aim to develop my expertise in user experience design and healthcare, focusing on inclusive solutions for elderly populations. I also plan to raise funds through government grants or crowdfunding to launch ActiveSenior. The funds will be used for technology development, including wearable sensors, AI-driven diagnostics, and app development, as well as marketing to acquire initial users. As the next step, through partnerships with corporations and healthcare institutions, I will build a sustainable revenue model and drive long-term growth.
