Three questions to the project team
What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
The main UX challenge of Afya was crafting a healthcare tool that feels approachable and empowering while tackling a serious global issue: inaccessible and expensive healthcare. Afya’s mission is to deliver cutting-edge eNose technology in a way that’s intuitive, non-intimidating, and universally understandable, even for first-time users.
The design focuses on creating trust through simplicity and a humble form that blends naturally into any environment, reducing the stigma around medical devices. Visual cues and interactions on the device make the experience feel empowering rather than clinical. By prioritizing inclusivity, Afya transforms advanced diagnostics into a tool anyone can use, breaking barriers in global healthcare access.
What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
From the start, I was certain about using eNose technology in the product but the real challenge was making this innovation truly accessible and affordable. The 'aha!' moment came when I thought about integrating the pay-per-use model, which not only addressed cost barriers but also seamlessly aligned with Afya's vision. It was as if every puzzle piece clicked into place, creating a perfect harmony of innovation and inclusivity. This model expanded Afya's reach, making it affordable across diverse scenarios, from urban to rural areas. Witnessing how this approach could empower users with life-saving insights reaffirmed the power of thoughtful design in shaping equitable healthcare solutions.
Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
Since I started designing, I’ve always wanted my work to make a real difference. My passion comes from wanting to create solutions that have a positive impact on Planet, People and Play. I want to continue designing with purpose, focusing on the real world problems with the desire of finding meaningful solutions.
In the next five years, I see Afya becoming a benchmark for the intersection of frugal innovation and healthcare technology. Collaborating with healthcare experts and companies, I hope to refine Afya further and see it saving lives, ultimately shaping the future of accessible, affordable healthcare.
