Three questions to the project team
What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
The main UX challenge was balancing professional-level control with everyday simplicity. The interface needed to feel credible and powerful to expert users, while remaining approachable and intuitive for users who simply want great coffee without understanding technical parameters. Another key challenge was designing a flexible, scalable system that works consistently across different screen sizes and machine variants. The UX had to maintain clarity, hierarchy, and brand recognition regardless of display format, without fragmenting the experience. Creating a linear, guided flow that still allowed customization, was central to solving this challenge.
What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
A personal highlight was the moment when the three-level structure for user settings emerged. Organizing complexity into progressive layers allowed both expert and novice users to feel confident and in control, and it became a cornerstone of the entire UX concept. A more challenging phase was finding the right balance between automation and manual control. Early concepts either felt too simplified for advanced users or too technical for everyday use, so we had to review quite a few times. Ultimately, seeing users navigate the final concept intuitively, confirmed that these iterations were essential and worthwhile.
Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
As MED team, we see ourselves continuing to work at the intersection of UX strategy, system design, and product ecosystems, focusing on transforming complex technology into meaningful, intuitive everyday experiences. This project represents a strong step in that direction, demonstrating how thoughtful UX design can bridge innovation, business value, and long-term emotional user engagement.
