Three questions to the project team
What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
The core challenge was unifying a rapidly scaling, enterprise-grade HCM that had evolved organically over time. Today, Darwinbox serves more than four million users across 130 countries, supporting over 30 personas through an interconnected suite of 14 products and thousands of workflows. While powerful, this scale introduced fragmentation, uneven UX maturity, inconsistent patterns, and rising cognitive load for users navigating the ecosystem. The only viable path forward was to create a system that could scale over time—one that unifies design and development into a single, shared foundation while remaining flexible enough to support continuous growth. This led to the creation of Sapien, built around five pillars: Human, Evolving, Minimal, Inclusive, and Trustworthy.
What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
The defining “aha” moment came when we realized that Sapien should not begin with components, but with perception. Instead of asking what to build, we asked how the product should feel, using internal and external perception studies to reveal the true foundations Sapien should stand on: Human, Minimal, Evolving, Inclusive, and Trustworthy. These insights took form through North Star designs, which made the future tangible and sparked immediate resonance across leadership and stakeholders alike. We reframed Sapien not just as a centralized system, but as a shared language, one that built ownership, reduced duplication, and accelerated collaboration. This shift helped us reach MVP in under 1.5 years, setting a new benchmark for speed at enterprise scale.

Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
In five years, Sapien will evolve from a design system into a living design intelligence, powering Darwinbox’s global HCM experiences across platforms, devices, regions, and emerging technologies. With deeper design-to-code automation and AI-assisted workflows enabled through MCP integration, Sapien will move seamlessly from intent to implementation, accelerating innovation at enterprise scale. Beyond systems, Sapien’s true impact will be in shaping the future of work by elevating everyday experiences for millions, making work feel more intuitive and inclusive. Powered by responsible AI, Sapien will grow in scale, intelligence, and influence while remaining anchored in its human core, ensuring technology amplifies empathy rather than replaces it.
