»Yona is an emotion-driven design concept that reimagines the pelvic exam from a strictly patient-centered perspective. It focuses on a topic that for many years remained unobserved and not talked about. It’s a great example of how to re-conceptualize a deeply personal experience and set out to transform it.«

Three questions to the project team

1. What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
Our approach is to reimagine the entire pelvic exam experience inclusive of all patients, including marginalized groups and individuals. Our initial concepts are open-sourced on our website and target seven moments-of-truth in the patient experience journey. Additionally, we are also developing a redesign of the speculum hardware, used in the exam.

2. What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
The speculum hasn’t been redesigned in 200 years and the exam process has not been considered cohesively. Additionally, we’ve expanded the definition of ‘women’s health’ to include all people with vaginas.

3. Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
Yona is a living project. In five years we would love to see the Yona speculum in the hands of providers and helping patients take care of their pelvic health.
