Three questions for the project team

What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
One of the primary challenges we faced in this project was that sea scattering is still a relatively novel concept for many, resulting in a scarcity of existing information and references to guide us. This required us to invest considerable time in defining the core problem and devising a solution that aligned with the team's vision. A significant part of our discussions centered around how to balance the emotional needs of users during this sensitive journey with the app's functionality. Our goal was to create an app that was intuitive and minimally intrusive, yet capable of authentically helping the user express emotions when needed. Recognizing that individuals process grief and injury differently, we strived to design a solution that could accommodate a broad range of emotional responses effectively.

What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
As a small design team with diverse responsibilities and perspectives, one of the highlights was achieving consensus on the design solution that resonated with everyone. The most significant aha!-moment occurred when we collectively identified a solution that addressed our varied focuses. Our initial concept involved a marine life-friendly urn, closely tied to the app, which posed a potential barrier for users not directly involved in the funeral but wanting to commemorate the deceased. In our final design iteration, we ensured accessibility by allowing users to initiate their journey at any time by simply entering the location and time of the sea scattering, even if they had not used the app during the ceremony. This inclusive approach was a breakthrough moment. While the process had its low points, particularly during times of intense debate and differing viewpoints, the eventual consensus and successful implementation made it all worthwhile.

Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
Our aspiration for this project is to foster meaningful discussions and broader acceptance of the concept. We envision the app gaining popularity and serving as a catalyst for more relevant conversations around sea scattering. Additionally, we hope to collaborate with pertinent non-profit organizations to implement this design, aiming to promote sustainability and provide comfort during emotional journeys. Our goal is to see the app contribute positively to society, reducing sadness and enhancing support for those who choose this form of memorialization.
