Three questions to the project team
What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
What sets Kleinanzeigen apart from many other platforms is that its inventory is created from users for users. Instead of primarily interacting with the platform, users interact with each other – which introduces a level of unpredictability. Our research shows that users have very different expectations regarding their experience on the platform. The core challenge is to bring these diverse users together and ensure a positive experience for all parties involved.
What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
One of the most rewarding aspects of working at Kleinanzeigen is seeing how new features are adopted at scale. Rolling out a feature and then observing thousands, sometimes millions, of users engaging with it is incredibly exciting. For example, the user rating feature is used around 250000 times a day. It’s inspiring to witness such widespread adoption.
At the same time, there are many ideas we haven’t been able to realize yet. Colleagues across the company regularly contribute creative concepts that could greatly improve the platform. Letting go of some of these, at least for now, is never easy. But like any digital product, we have to set clear priorities and maintain focus.
Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
We’re excited about what lies ahead for Kleinanzeigen. Naturally, we’re exploring how AI can reduce manual effort and make our users’ lives easier. But beyond that, we’re working on ideas to simplify our core flows – so seamless that users barely need to think about whether they want to buy or sell on Kleinanzeigen. We aim to introduce more inspirational features, helping users discover new things even without a clear intent. Whatever we build, our goal remains the same: to be the easy, sustainable alternative.
