Three questions to the project team

What was the particular challenge of the project from a UX point of view?
The main UX challenge was creating a practical, intuitive experience that helps users reduce food waste while encouraging sustainable habits. Users often forgot expiration dates, lacked food storage knowledge, struggled to finish fresh groceries, and found meal planning difficult. To address these issues, we explored features like grocery store mapping for efficient shopping, packaging cues for expiration and usage tips, and smart ingredient tracking. Through interviews, surveys, and user testing, we refined the app to support mindful consumption in an engaging, user-friendly way that fosters lasting behavioral change.

What was your personal highlight in the development process? Was there an aha!-moment, was there a low point?
A personal highlight of the development process was the collaborative and inspiring team environment. Despite encountering challenges and multiple failed attempts, the team stayed positive and motivated throughout. We encouraged one another to explore ideas and push creative boundaries. The “aha!” moment arrived when we aligned on a clear design direction—everyone felt energized and united by a shared vision. With well-defined roles, we worked efficiently, dividing tasks across research, visual design, UX prototyping, user testing, and refinement. This strong teamwork transformed our initial concept into a fully realized and functional app, reflecting the strengths and dedication of each team member.

Where do you see yourself and the project in the next five years?
Over the next five years, the aim is to increase awareness of ZERO OUT and establish it as a trusted solution for reducing food waste. The team will work closely with developers to build a fully functional prototype and gather real user data. Through analyzing case studies and conducting thorough user testing, the app will be continuously refined. Alongside active promotion on social media to build community support, these insights will help secure partnerships with major London supermarkets and local nonprofits. This collaborative approach will enable the app to not only reduce waste but also support food donation efforts, creating a positive impact on both users and the wider community.
